The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is one of the three national parks in Abruzzo and is one of Italy's largest protected natural reserves. The environmental, tourist, and cultural project of the Park aims not only to safeguard the natural beauty of this area but also to protect and enhance a heritage rooted in centuries-old traditions. Within the Park, the terrain is largely mountainous, with more than twenty peaks exceeding 2000 meters in altitude. It is characterized by the presence of three mountain groups: the Monti Gemelli, the Monti della Laga, and the Gran Sasso d'Italia mountain chain. The park's geographical location, the presence of relief features, and the diversity of landscapes result in a surprising wealth from both a floral and faunal perspective. The size of the Park has led to the formation of 11 tourist-cultural environmental districts, areas where projects for the enhancement and coordination of tourism activities can be implemented.
Forests cover about half of the mountainous territory of the Park, with various types of woods, including holm oaks, oaks, poplars, chestnuts, beeches, and birches, creating landscapes of marvellous colours in different seasons of the year. The agricultural territory of the Gran Sasso presents itself as an ancient and diversified landscape with roots dating back to the Italic period. In particular, the southern slope of the Gran Sasso not only has extensive grazing areas but also open fields, saffron cultivation, olive groves, and vineyards. Natural aspects are not the only beauty of the Park, as it is known for the perfect harmony between nature and urban settlements. Inside the park, you can find several fortified villages and towns that, thanks to their architectural and cultural uniqueness, as well as their eno-gastronomic and folklore traditions, are truly unique destinations.
