Rocca Calascio

Rocca Calascio, a small village of the Abruzzo town of Calascio, is an apartment yet fascinating village of medieval origins that stands on a hill an altitude of 1460 meters. Located about three kilometers from the municipality of Calascio, Rocca Calascio houses a fortress that was built around the 12th century in a strategic position that allowed for the control of the Abruzzo valleys. In fact, this place was crucial military observation point that allowed for the detection of any enemy attacks and was also in communication with the other watchtowers in the area. As a result of a violent earthquake that occurred in the 11th century, Rocca Calascio was largely destroyed, and after this episode, the population decided to move downstream to the current town of Calascio.

With the passing of years, unfortunately, the fortress has been gradually abandoned until 1980s when this location was rediscovered and enhanced. The magical atmosphere that characterizes this village, its history, and the magnificent surrounding views have made Rocca Calascio not only a highly sought-after destination in Abruzzo but also a perfect set where some famous directors have filmed scenes for famous movies.
